Powder coating is a dry, VOC-free (volatile organic compound) coating applied electrostatically and cured in an industrial oven. Because the coating is dry, there are almost no environmental wastes or fumes to be contained or mitigated, like paint. When under heat during the curing process, the powder molecules undergo an irreversible change called cross-linking to form a continuous barrier coating.
The term "Stronger, Greener, Better" didn't come about by chance...
Paints contain toxic fumes and chemicals that must be applied and disposed of very carefully to avoid contaminating people and the environment. Powders contain almost no fumes or byproducts that require special handling or disposal. Application and clean-up require no chemicals or special safety equipment, or disposal processes. Powder waste can even be recycled for use later on.
We deliver only the very best in powder coating. To do this, we spend extra time and much care during our pre-treatment process. This uses a phosphate wash to prepare the metal above and beyond what most other powder coating providers do, plus our other pre-treatment steps give the powder the long life you expect.
The Pre-Treatment Process:
1. Media Blast
2. Careful Hanging/Rack
3. Phosphate Spray wand Wash
4. Thorough Drying/Masking
Our detailed and specialized pre-treatment process ensures:
Painting requires drying time when the substrate cannot be touched or handled. Sometimes this process can take days and is heavily affected by weather, humidity, and the paint formula. Sometimes this process can be accelerated with heat, but this requires specific and expensive equipment. This dry time means a facility must stop production while waiting for the process to complete.
With so many thousands of formulas of paints and powders, general comparisons cannot be made fairly. However, it can be said that most powders tend to be more flexible, impact resistant, and have longer salt spray testing times than most paints. Specific details can be provided upon request.
Most powders begin impact hardness tests between 140-180 lbs per square inch before cracking occurs. Most pants are around 40.
Because of the pre-treatment process, powders adhere better and for longer times than most paints.
Powder can be flexed over a 1/8" mandrel without cracking or breaking off.
The harder the pencil, the more scratch resistant the coating is. Most powders can be nearly 50% harder than most paints.
To achieve the same performance, paints often need to be applied 2-3 times thicker than powder.
Powder must cure under heat, so there are no "dry" or "flash off" times to wait for, like with paint. Once cool, it's 100% ready.
